Wakey, wakey, rise and shine

Det är lördag. Jag vaknade kl 08:02 av vad jag trodde var intergalaktisk atomkrigsföring utanför fönstret, men det visade sig bara vara arbetarna utanför som framkallade snöskred. Nu när jag har haft min episka frukost och morgonkaffet har gjort sitt är jag ändå glad att jag inte sovit halva dagen. Jag har nämligen en viss uppsats som borde skrivas färdigt snart. Jag har kommit en bit, men de senaste dagarna har jag varit extremt oproduktiv.. Jag har iofs haft en del andra saker att stå i. Till exempel fixa nytt körkort, eftersom jag tappat bort mitt gamla tillsammans med bankomatkort och dyl i veckan.

Sen har jag även dagdrömt om ett instrument jag gärna vill ha i födelsedagspresent;

I Think I'm In Love..

Vet inte om man ska lita till fullo på ovanstående lista. Jag har faktiskt lyssnat på lite annat än bara Spiritualized det senaste halvåret. Tror dock att den haltande statistiken kan ha att göra med att jag i oktober förra året var och såg Spiritualized live på Royal Festival Hall i London. I och med deras jubileumsutgåva av Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space BP gjorde de en serie tematiska spelningar där de framförde skivan från början till slut, låt för låt. Utan att blinka kan jag säga att det var den bästa spelningen jag hittills varit på i mitt liv. Så om jag såhär i början av det nya årtiondet ska ge ett par goda råd inför framtiden är de som följer; om du får chansen att se Spiritualized live: tveka inte en sekund, och vidare om du inte lyssnat på (antagligen deras bästa skiva) Ladies and gentlemen..: gör så illa kvickt.

Symmetries of the Umbrella Cell Surface

The outer layer of cells that lines the urinary tract are called umbrella cells. These are large, well-shaped cells that not infrequently contain more than one nuclei. The umbrella cells are sewn together like a patchwork with tiny but numerous proteins creating what is called tight junctions. The tight junctions make the patchwork impermeable to water and ions and other dissolved molecules, and also protect underlying structures against pathogens like bacteria.

I have for many years been fascinated by symmetries of nature and when i was reading this scientific article about the urothelium the other day I saw a beautiful photo. It was an image, created by a scanning electron microscope, showing the surface of an umbrella cell with great magnification.

On the surface of the umbrella cell there are raised ridges and deep valleys. In the valleys there are most beautiful structures called plaques that consist of so-called AUM particles. The AUM particles, in turn, is thought to be built up by a type of proteins called uroplakins. Anywho, these AUM particles exhibit a beautiful six-fold symmetry shown on the image above. One plaque consist of approx 1000-3000 AUM particles!

The plaques and AUM particles have been known for some time, but their function is not well understood. One speculation is that they modulate the surface area of the umbrella cell during filling and voiding of the bladder.
